Animal A Day St Patty’s Day Edition: The closest thing to a snake you’ll find in Ireland is a Common Viviparous Lizard thanks to good ol St Patrick. Legend has it, St Patrick drove all snakes out of Ireland and into the sea, but according to fossil research, there hasn’t been any snakes in Ireland ever. The viviparous lizard is the only land reptile native to Ireland.
White-tailed Deer prefer to eat clovers. They are probably the biggest mammal-fan of this lucky plant aside from humans on St Patty’s Day.
The Spiny Turtle is about the same size as a Painted Turtle. The sharp spikes lose their edge as the turtle ages, leaving older turtles with a much smoother shell.
Fruit Flies seem to appear out of thin air as soon as your #fruit starts to get more than ripe. They almost do, considering fruit flies lay hundreds of eggs that can hatch in mere hours. These little guys can fit through the screen mesh on your windows and doors and will do so as soon as they smell the byproduct of fermentation aka alcohol. It’s also possible to bring them home from the grocery store. 🍌
Clownfish will perform an elaborate dance when introducing itself to a potential anemone host. It’s skin is covered in a protective mucus that makes it immune to the anemone’s otherwise lethal sting. In exchange for residence, the clownfish will keep it’s host free of parasites and drive away any intruders. Clownfish are all born male, but they have the ability to permanently change into females if necessary.
The Swallow-tailed Kite doesn’t flap it’s wings too often while flying. It rotates it’s forked tail to steer and make sharp turns while gliding at high altitudes. These birds are highly agile and will snatch up and eat treetop lizards or flying insects while airborne.
Cougars aka MountainLions/Pumas/Catamounts are large stealthy predators that can be found all over the Americas. A few of these big cats require a large space of about 78-square-kilometers to thrive. The scream of a cougar has been described to sometimes resemble the sound of a woman’s blood-curdling scream or a harsh baby’s cry. Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare but not unheard of.
Squid have powerful parrot-like beaks and a set of suction cups on their tentacles that are covered in sharp razor hooks. Large circular scars of similar shape have been found on whales, suggesting that they must have crossed paths and wrestled with a giant squid at some point.
